(now i’ve heard the same stories from public schoolers as well, so let’s not get our feathers ruffled. i’m not taking sides here.) the point is, we shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help. if you’re out of your depth, get a tutor. get enrolled in some online programs. call in an expert. homeschooling doesn’t mean we’re stuck at home. you’re a guide to your child’s education. it’s okay to call for assistance. even ceos don’t work alone. like this post? i’m talking about the book antifragile by nassem nicholas taleb , which i got my hands on about a week ago. i had heard much about this book and i have to say, it lived up to the hype and much more. the central idea in the book is the idea of antifragility – not robustness, mind you. robust resists shocks and change. antifragile, according to taleb is anything that gets better as a result of stressors, shocks, volatility, noise, mistakes, faults, attacks, or failures. in his own words: some things benefit from shocks; they thrive and grow when exposed to volatility, randomness, disorder, and stressors and love adventure , risk, and uncertainty. yet, in spite of the ubiquity of the phenomenon, there is no word for the exact opposite of fragile. let us call it antifragile. antifragility is beyond resilience or robustness. the resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better. this property is behind everything that has changed with time: evolution, culture, ideas, revolutions, political systems, technological innovation, cultural and economic success, corporate survival, good recipes (say, chicken soup or steak tartare with a drop of cognac), the rise of cities, cultures, legal systems, equatorial forests, bacterial resistance … even our own existence as a species on this planet. and antifragility determines the boundary between what is living and organic (or complex), say, the human body, and what is inert, say, a physical object like the stapler on your desk. the antifragile loves randomness and uncertainty, which also means— crucially—a love of errors, a certain class of errors. antifragility has a singular property of allowing us to deal with the unknown, to do things without understanding them— and do them well. let me be more aggressive: we are largely better at doing than we are at thinking, thanks to antifragility. i’d rather be dumb and antifragile than extremely smart and fragile, any time. applying antifragility this made me start thinking about how the concept of the antifragile could be applied in our homeschool, if at all. did it even exist there? could it? could our math drills , the little bit of pressure i argue for, the memorization i consider important be making my children’s education sufficiently antifragile? for all the socialization questions they get, the fact that they can go talk to a complete stranger regardless of age, is an example of antifragility. the lack of instructions every minute of the day , the freedom to choose (and mess up often!) like on the playground, is an example of antifragility. by the end of the book, even though taleb hadn’t mentioned homeschooling once, i realized the strength of homeschooling came not from following a specific way of doing things or following this curriculum or that style, but from the fact that antifragility was built into it. in homeschooling, unless you’re an extreme planner, you will make mistakes, your children will make mistakes, we will fail, we will hit roadblocks, we will revise our schedule, freak out and do things wrong, then do them right and pretty soon mess them up again. but that’s the beauty of it. that’s what makes it antifragile. homeschooling is inherently antifragile. keep it that way. it’s a good thing. like this post? no? the perfect homeschooling family? no, i mean, really, think about it before you answer. maybe we’ll both answer this together. ready? no? whew. me neither. i love that we’re on the same page here because i remember not knowing this. as a new homeschooler, all i ever wanted to do was be like that homeschooling mom i knew. i thought this was the way to homeschool. if i could just follow this one particular path, we would be golden. we would be homeschooling with a capital h. if my children would just do this one thing or that, if they started their own etsy stores, if they would greet people when we went to someone’s house, if they sat still in church, we would be the perfect homeschoolers. my thinking along these lines would take on epic proportions and i followed them down dark alleys. if i could be this way, i thought, dress this way, weave my own clothes from my own
